For Julie, growth has always started with curiosity and a willingness to learn from the people around her.
Growing up in Brentwood, California, Julie developed an interest in helping others and understanding the factors that shape healthy communities. That passion led her to the University of California, Merced, where she earned a degree in Public Health and became an advocate for environmental health. Whether she's reading, watching YouTube, or spending time with friends, Julie enjoys learning new perspectives and bringing those lessons into her everyday life.
As Julie begins her service year as a City Year AmeriCorps Member, she's excited to step into classrooms, build meaningful relationships with students, and continue growing alongside a team of dedicated peers.
What made you choose a year of service with City Year?
Choosing to serve with City Year gave me the opportunity to work and engage in education. Having the chance to help nurture and mentor students within our schools is something I'm really excited about. I'm looking forward to learning how to best assist in the classroom, while also finding ways to support my peers throughout the year.
What are you most excited about as you begin your service year?
I'm excited to work alongside my fellow AmeriCorps members and continue developing professional skills. I'm also looking forward to adapting to an education-based environment and learning as much as I can from the experience.
What are you most nervous about?
Honestly, I'm most nervous about kids throwing up in class. I think it's just a fear in general!
Learning Through Service...
One of the biggest surprises for Julie so far has been how much she has already learned from the people around her. She has been inspired by the patience, kindness, and advocacy demonstrated by her teammates and peers and has found herself adopting many of the strategies and approaches she sees them use every day.
As she looks ahead to the rest of the year, Julie hopes her students walk away knowing that they are never alone. Whether it's a teacher, support staff member, or a City Year AmeriCorps member, she wants every student to know there is always someone in their corner, ready to support them through challenges and celebrate their successes.
Julie is just beginning her City Year journey, but she is already embracing opportunities to learn, grow, and serve. We are thrilled to welcome Julie to the team and can't wait to see the impact she makes this year. Welcome to service, Julie!
