Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders by Partnering with Applied Wisdom
At City Year Bay Area, leadership development is at the heart so much of the work we do with our AmeriCorps Student Success Coaches. Every year, these brave young adults dedicate themselves to helping students build confidence, improve attendance, and succeed in school—but their own journey as emerging leaders is just as important.
That's why we're excited to announce a new partnership with Applied Wisdom for Nonprofits, bringing practical, time-tested leadership principles into City Year's Idealist's Journey curriculum.
Developed by former Applied Materials executive Jim Morgan, Applied Wisdom translates decades of leadership experience into actionable lessons that help individuals become more effective communicators, collaborators, and problem-solvers. Through this partnership, those lessons will be integrated into the leadership development experience of City Year Bay Area's AmeriCorps members, giving them tools they can apply immediately in their schools and carry with them throughout their careers.
Leadership Lessons That Last
Throughout the year, Student Success Coaches will participate in learning sessions centered around several core leadership concepts from Applied Wisdom, including:
The Rule of Three – Simplifying communication and sharpening focus on what matters most.
Who's Got the Monkey? – Understanding ownership, accountability, and effective delegation.
Bad News is Good News – Creating a culture of transparency where challenges are addressed early and openly.
Book It and Ship It – Moving beyond perfectionism to take action, learn, and continuously improve.
These practical frameworks are designed to help corps members navigate the everyday challenges of serving in schools while strengthening the leadership skills they'll rely on long after their year of service.
Reflection That Builds Stronger Leaders
Leadership isn't developed through learning alone—it's strengthened through reflection.
To help Student Success Coaches connect these principles to their daily experiences, City Year Bay Area has incorporated guided journaling and personal reflection into each session. As corps members reflect on classroom successes, challenges, and moments of growth, they'll have opportunities to apply these leadership concepts in meaningful and personal ways.
This intentional practice helps transform leadership theories into lived experiences, allowing participants to better understand their own leadership styles while building resilience, confidence, and adaptability.
Investing in Leaders Who Serve
At City Year Bay Area, our Idealist's Journey is designed to help young adults grow not only as educators and mentors, but as leaders prepared to make a lasting impact in their communities.
Our partnership with Applied Wisdom for Nonprofits strengthens that commitment by connecting Student Success Coaches with leadership principles rooted in decades of real-world experience. In addition to integrating these concepts into our curriculum, the partnership includes the development of original video content featuring Jim Morgan alongside City Year Bay Area Executive Director Luke Hostetter and Board Chair Charlie Pappis. These resources will help bring the lessons to life and support corps members throughout their service year.
Together, City Year Bay Area and Applied Wisdom for Nonprofits are investing in the next generation of leaders—equipping young people with the mindset, skills, and confidence to create meaningful change in classrooms today and in their careers and communities for years to come.
